The Mais Horse Race Track in Merano

The Mais horse race track is regarded as one of the most beautiful horse racing facilities in all of Europe. It was built in 1935 in just one year on a 40 hectare area and is considered one of the exemplary equestrian facilities.

The most famous horse racing are the rustic racing with the avelignesi horses, the "Mais Oktoberfest", and the Grand Prix Merano Forst, a steeplechase high hurdles, whose race course extension is more than 5000 metres.

This racing, performed for the first time the 26 October 1935 on the occasion of the new hippodrome opening, is matched with the national lottery. Then the prize money amounted to 1 million Lire, today amounts to 1.000.000 Euro (2 billions Lire).

The Mais horse race track is located in close proximity to the city centre. Moreover there is a frequent bus service (n°11 e n°12) and the Mais railway station is near the hippodrome entrance.
