Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)

Otoplasty is a very simple procedure aimed at correcting protruding ears.

The operation usually lasts approximately ninety minutes and can be performed with the use of local anesthetics. Normally, the procedure is performed as follows:The backside of the ear is incised and lifted up. The cartilage will be reshaped afterwards. The otoplasty usually leaves a narrow scar behind the ear which becomes less and less visible over time. The procedure does have no impact on hearing.

The ideal age: An ear reshaping can be performed on children as young as 10 years of age.

Postoperative care: After the operation a large, turban-like headband bandage is applied in order to protect the ears. It is changed daily and removed entirely after four to five days.After a week the headband is exchanged for a lighter, elastic band which is worn day and night for approximately one month.

Risks: Complications are rare. As with any operation, swelling after an ear reshaping can arise in the operated upon area and may be removed during a second procedure.
